IT, Assistant Director

Location: New Hampton, NY


The Assistant Director, Technology will work closely with the Director of Information Technology to implement IT strategy, oversee the day-to-day operation of the department, as well as provide technical  management to IT staff; perform advanced troubleshooting and planning within the department. The position will also respond to advanced level user requests for assistance; train and mentor IT staff; ensure optimum up time of network and resources. The management of projects, implementations and documentation of policies, procedures, and standards as well as SOX auditing processes are also a responsibility of the position.  The position will ensure the proper maintenance of the corporation’s Information Systems as well as assist in the maintaining of confidentiality, integrity and availability of all systems.


1.            Assist in the implementation of IT strategic and operational plans to achieve business goals by promoting innovation, prioritizing IT initiatives and coordinating the evaluation, deployment and management of current and future IT systems across the organization
2.            Take affirmative action in all conditions of employment to ensure that equal opportunity efforts and results are consistent with governmental rules and regulations and established Company policies and procedures.
3.            Follow and enforce all safety policies and procedures including use of safety equipment (PPE) and equipment safeguards.  Work to advance and promote the safety culture of the site
4.            Assist in the direction and management of all Information Technology functions of the enterprise including the data and disaster recovery centers, help desk functions, communication networks (voice and data), computer program development, computer systems operations, data security and integrity
5.            Approve the purchase, rent, lease, license, or other acquisition from outside sources of computer, communication and office systems, hardware, software, or services to meet the needs of the company in accordance with established Corporate Policies
6.            Assist in the authoring, support the implementation of IT policies for employees, contributing to increased data security and compliance with regulatory legislation
7.            Contribute to the establishment IT departmental goals, objectives and operating procedures consistent with the corporate strategic plan and aligned with Balchem’s Core Values
8.            Conduct and document monthly log reviews of IT staff activity, backup processes and other essential activities in compliance with regulatory statutes and audit requirements
9.            Work with external auditors on a bi-annual basis in the testing, verification, review and continual improvement of IT General Controls in accordance with Sarbanes Oxley regulation
10.          Keep current with, analyze and evaluate trends and issues in the IT industry, including current technologies and prices
11.          Interact as necessary with outside contractors, consultants, and engineers in the development, design, or expansion of manufacturing, office, or data processing space to ensure maximum benefit and return on investment in information systems
12.          Assist in the alignment of IT initiatives with business priorities while balancing resource constraints (staff and fiscal) to optimize IT investments
13.          Work with the Director of Information Technology in the development, monitoring and control of the information technology annual operating and capital budgets
14.          Work with key members of various departments, IT staff and third party vendors to identify and resolve application issues, system enhancements, new user requirements, and ensuring contracts are kept up to date and cost maintenance strategies are assessed and analyzed on a periodic basis
15.          Approve, manage and implement changes in data processing, communication, or office system equipment aligning technological advancements with corporate goals while minimizing cost and ensuring reliable and timely services
16.          Ensure proper implementation, configuration, monitoring and maintenance of the network infrastructure including servers, security firewalls, as well as enterprise applications, LAN/WAN and internet connectivity
17.          Manage and coordinate the projects and activities of the application support, infrastructure and IT operations groups aligned to and in support of department and organizational goals


A Bachelor’s Degree, at least 5 years’ experience and related technical certifications are required.  An advanced degree in business administration or computer science with at least 2 years’ experience in managing or directing an IT operation is desired. The position requires knowledge of business processes, management, budgeting and business office operations as well as desktop and server systems, networking equipment and design, software, personnel capabilities and project management.


 A broad understanding of general business management practices; network infrastructure design and architecture as well as computer operations required to support and effectively utilize personnel and equipment resources across the enterprise.  Familiarity with Sarbanes Oxley regulations in addition to the COBIT framework for IT governance.  Working knowledge of and experience with networking protocols, Active Directory, Windows Operating Systems, data recovery and backup systems, CISCO’s IOS for routers and switches, firewall and intrusion detection/prevention hardware and software tools.  Demonstrated ability to lead, direct and inspire a high performance team as well as manage IT related projects, implementations and deployments.
