Technical Development Manager of Applications (Bakery, Meat, Confectionary, Beverages, and Dairy)

Description

Technical Development Manager of Applications to lead R&D Application projects, personnel and lab. Management of all Application functions with emphasis on evaluating new products in a variety of current and innovative applications. Applications area focuses primarily on Bakery, Meat and Confectionery. Areas of expansion will include Dairy and Beverage. Specific role includes providing technical leadership on projects, directing a team of 4 scientists, project leaders, technicians, supporting the sales and commercial teams, supporting customers (on-site as needed). Oversee the Product Development aspect of Inclusions products and business. Position will work closely with Business Leads, Sales, Manufacturing, and Quality Assurance to accomplish company objectives.  

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for leading all technical activity of a project evaluating encapsulated products within applications including new products, current products, and competitive samples primarily within Bakery, Meat, and Confectionary Industry; Dairy and Beverage applications will be potentially evaluated as well
  • Directs the Application Team and Inclusions Product Development resource to deliver goals laid out by the Director of R&D and Commercial Team Leads
  • Ensures projects are designed and executed in a scientific manner; Projects are to be fully documented and results communicated to key stakeholders
  • Provides Commercial Leads and Sales with technical expertise needed to work closely with customers; This may include participation in customer presentations to resolve product issues and/or taking customer technical calls  
  • Directs new product development of Inclusions product line and ensure to maintain logical project files documenting new inventions and improvements; Works closely with manufacturing on integrating new formulas into production and assisting with plant scale-up
  • Provides technical and innovation insights to internal departments, specifically sales, marketing, and quality. Provide insight on new manufacturing techniques and materials as required, Provides technical support to help resolve quality issues associated with application
  • Oversees the use and maintenance of all lab equipment as necessary
  • Initiates and maintains the company formulas in Professional File (Deacom, Genesis) or similar program as needed
  • Leads internal technical training and give presentations to customers and other departments within the company as needed. This will include training new employees and preparing new product demonstrations for trade shows and sales meetings
  • Attends technical training seminars and conferences, including the National IFT, ASB, SSW, and Meat Symposium, as needed, to stay current on new products, processes and health and nutrition trends
  • Reviews and measures the department accomplishments by using data that can be verified.  Effectively lead groups to achieve company goals and objectives; This includes completing projects on time, and communicating results to move projects forward   
  • Manages employees within the department to accomplish the above guidelines. Effectively and timely, communicate the progress with monthly reports or frequency as requested
  • Performs other duties as directed by the Director of R&D or other Leaders in the organization
  • Completes Monthly Reports including Resource allocation.  Direct resources to the appropriate priority projects as identified
  • Complies with all policies and procedures of the Corporation
Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science required, preferable in food science, engineering, food technology/processing or related physical science
  • Application Development experience in Bakery, Meat, Confectionery, Dairy and Beverages is necessary; Bakery industrial experience is desired 
  • 5+ years of related technical service/research and development experience/application development experience, including working directly with sales and customers
  • Must possess a comprehensive knowledge of bakery meat and confectionery ingredients, products, formulations, bakery processes, dairy ingredients, products, processing, beverage ingredients, products, processing, and current nutritional and health trends  
  • Familiarity with principals of applications development, including but not limited to Bakery, Meat, and Confectionery, Beverages, and Dairy Industry
  • Must be able to travel to customers with Sales rep to give technical presentations and expertise
  • Must be able to operate lab equipment; An understanding of the purpose of each piece of equipment and how it works is required
  • Having an understanding of Bakery Ingredient interaction and commercial processing is a great asset
  • Ability to design tests and accurately report results in a manner suitable for presentation to customers and management
  • Leadership, problem solving, good communication skills and ability to work independently are all skills for good job performance
  • Detail oriented and multi-tasking a must
  • Computer skills required

Physical demands and work environment:

  • Must be able to work on their feet for extended periods of time
  • Will be required to lift equipment and carry large/heavy boxes
  • Work environment is typical laboratory and office setting, but may require plant environment as well at times
