The Quality Assurance Manager is a member of the site leadership team responsible for ensuring products manufactured at the site are safe, wholesome and comply with all applicable Balchem, customer and regulatory requirements. They will support and coach the site team in developing and maintaining a culture of best in class Quality through their influence and coaching. The QM is responsible for supporting and optimizing site quality operations and practices through effective data analysis and decision making.



Responsibilities include:


  •  Direct leadership of 4-7 employees in the Quality-Control lab, coordinate laboratory activities including, hiring, training and scheduling. Establish priorities and provide review and technical support, keeping analytical protocols and methods up to date.
  •  Manage and supervise QC laboratory activities and laboratory personnel, coordinating daily work activities and overseeing instrument calibration and preventative maintenance programs. Ensure compliance with written procedures.
  •  Development and oversight of employee training in cGMPs, HACCP, HARPC, and annual refresher training for all employees.
  •  Coordinates with the Plant and Operations Managers to ensure that all food, feed and dietary ingredients are manufactured in accordance with industry and regulatory standards for quality and food safety. 
  •  Review and approval of  all specifications, procedures, test methods, and labeling
  •  Oversight of completed batch record review, product release and issuance of Certificates of Analysis
  •  Oversight of site Customer Complaint Program
  •  Champion effective Root Cause Analysis and provide oversight of the Corrective & Preventative Action Program. Includes review and approval of all investigations related to Out-Of-Specification Results, Non-Conforming Material Reviews, and Batch Deviations
  •  Issuance of the Annual Quality Review
  •  Support corporate Supplier Approval Program for raw materials and direct contact packaging
  •  Develop and lead site Internal audit program, and take a leadership role in audits by customers and regulatory or certifying bodies (including FDA, NYS Dept Ag & Markets, SQF, RSPO); coordinate audit responses to all findings.
  •  Champion continuous improvement and best practice programs for site.
  •  Oversight of Change Control and, when appropriate, Customer Notification
  •  Accountable for the site Food Safety and HACCP programs.
  •  Provide support for regulatory registrations (FDA for food, dietary ingredients and animal feed registrations), and kosher/halal certifications. .
  •  Familiarity with EU regulations for food/feed additives as well as Allergen and GM labeling requirements
  •  Act as site SQF Practitioner; responsible ensuring the site maintains programs and documentation necessary to support the development, implementation, maintenance and control of the SQF System.
  •  Responsible for notifying Quality Director of any incident affecting food safety.
  •  Performs duties of Chemical Hygiene Officer, including oversight of lab inspections and ensuring that appropriate training is being carried out. Manages the removal of hazardous laboratory waste in conjunction with the Safety and Environmental Manager.
  •  Uses effective negotiation shills to resolve conflict and drive alignment
  •  Provides coaching and constructive feedback in a timely manner
  •  Works effectively with team and cross functional partners




Education and Experience:


Bachelorís degree in Food Science or related discipline with three to five years of experience in quality management and experience supervising a Quality Control laboratory. Demonstrated leadership experience within the field. A Masterís degree is preferred. Equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of a Masterís degree.


Demonstrated working knowledge of cGMP for Food, Feed, Dietary Ingredients, as well as good laboratory practices, testing methodologies and manufacturing practices as described in the Food Chemical Codex (FCC), the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP), and Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). Demonstrated ability to understand and organize technical data for communications and analysis. Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills and possess good interpersonal skills. Must be an effective communicator, possess good listening skills and have effective presentation skills. Demonstrates the ability to make sound decisions based on data.


The ideal candidate possesses certifications in HACCP/HARPC, and SQF; and training in environmental monitoring, auditing and statistical process control.
