Quality Manager

Department: Quality
Location: Defiance, OH


The Quality Manager will be responsible for planning, directing and coordinating the quality assurance program and resources necessary for manufacturing food ingredients in accordance with local, state and national regulatory agencies and to meet specific customer requirements. Supporting plant operations by performing microbiological, physical and chemical analysis on food products from various stages of the manufacturing process and providing assistance to the operations team. Management of the Quality Assurance laboratories.


 Defines and maintains the programs and procedures necessary to maintain an acceptable level of product safety and quality and customer satisfaction as established by various federal, state, customer and company standards including responsibilities for: 

  1. Monitors and maintains quality through inspection programs of finished products and production operations and processes, and; through the review and approval of all specifications, procedures, test methods, and labeling.
  2. Oversight of completed batch record review and issuance of Certificates of Analysis
  3. Develop and implement methods and procedures for disposition of aged and non-conforming materials. Review and approval of all investigations related to Out-Of-Specification Results, Non-Conforming Material Reviews, and significant Batch Deviations
  4. Issuance of the Annual Quality Review
  5. Support corporate Supplier Approval Program for raw materials and direct contact packaging
  6. Conducts or manages internal audits on a regular basis necessary to confirm compliance to SQF and other applicable regulations to determine if food safety and quality systems are being maintained and followed. This also involves assisting to assure proper corrective action is carried out by determining the cause, effect and preventive actions.
  7. Responsible for reporting to management on the effectiveness of the Quality Management System
  8. Audits by customers and regulatory or certifying bodies (including FDA, Department of Ag & Markets, SQF, RSPO); coordinate audit responses to all findings.
  9. Oversight of Customer Complaint Program and issuance of a response to the customer
  10. Champion effective Root Cause Analysis and provide oversight of the Corrective & Preventative Action Program
  11. Oversight of Change Control and, when appropriate, Customer Notification
  12. Oversight of the Quality System including the Food Safety Program, SQF, and HACCP. Reports to the Director of QA monthly on the status of programs. Trained as PCQI and as SQF Practitioner.
  13. Development and oversight of employee training in cGMPs, HACCP, Allergen, Food Defense both onboarding and annual refresher training for all employees
  14. To assure compliance, supports the Regulatory Team on the following, as applicable: rabbinical requirements for Orthodox Union, Halal certification program through IFANCA, Organic foods
  15. Develop and maintain a pest control program in collaboration with a 3rd party provider
  16. Develop and maintain the Environmental Monitoring program. Oversight and/or performance of indicator organism testing, preparation of composite samples and collection of environmental samples for 3rd party pathogen analysis.
  17. Responsible for notifying Quality Director of any incident affecting food safety.
  18.  Ensure the site maintains the food safety manual that documents the written procedures, pre-requisite programs, food safety plan and other documentation necessary to support the development, implementation, maintenance and control of the SQF System.
  19.  Responsible for the development, implementation and maintenance of the Food Safety System and Quality Plan.
  20. Manage direct reports by setting goals and objectives and oversees execution of these goals and objectives. Manage and supervise QC laboratory activities, microbiology laboratory activities (if applicable) and laboratory personnel, coordinating daily work activities and overseeing instrument calibration and preventative maintenance programs as it relates to equipment used in the laboratories. Ensure compliance with written procedures.
  21. Works with the Plant Manager to assure compliance. GMP audits are performed monthly, outlining areas that need corrective action.
  22. Champion continuous improvement in all Quality processes.


Bachelorís degree in Quality or Science with a minimum of five years experience in a Quality Control laboratory and three to five years experience in Quality management with demonstrated leadership experience within the field.  

Demonstrated working knowledge of cGMP for Food, Feed, Dietary Ingredients, as well as good laboratory practices, testing methodologies and manufacturing practices as described in the Food Chemical Codex (FCC), the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP), and Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). Demonstrated ability to understand and organize technical data for communications and analysis. Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills and possess good interpersonal skills.

The ideal candidate possesses certifications in HACCP/HARPC, and SQF; and training in environmental monitoring, auditing and statistical process control. 

Must possess good communication and possess the highest integrity in conducting business affairs. Must exercise maturity and sound judgment in all dealings and associations with vendors and customers. Must be able to work independently and to organize tasks and manage the workload. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations, while defending decisions in a knowledgeable and rational manner. Able to interpret customer requirements and government regulations and apply to our products and process.
