Process Engineer, MN

Department: Engineering
Location: Faribault, MN

PRINCIPAL PURPOSE: 

This position is the principle project and manufacturing engineer for Faribault, MN, plus manages or assists with projects at other Balchem plants such as in Sleepy Eye, MN & Marshfield, WI. This position performs project and continuous improvement work to improve the plantsí capabilities and performance. Continually monitors business financials and performance metrics related to Safety, Quality, Cost, and Productivity. Responsibilities also include project work to support compliance with Environmental, Safety and Health regulations. All functions will be accomplished safely, timely, economically and in compliance with GMP and regulatory requirements. This position also serves as the backup to the Plant Manager. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Assists  Management Team in ensuring that all Balchem employees, private contractors, and visitors follow safety policies and procedures.
  • Follows and enforces all safety policies and procedures including use of safety equipment (PPE) and equipment safeguards. Works to advance and promote the safety culture of the site.
  • Performs time studies, value stream mapping, ergonomic assessments and other industrial engineering functions to support the safe and efficient operation of production equipment. Generates continuous improvement ideas based off of these observations. 
  • Executes continuous improvement project work to improve production, reactor and blend processing, site-wide purchasing, warehousing, and the movement of materials in and out of the Slate Hill facility in the most cost-effective manner possible.
  • Responsible for optimizing quality and yield of products. Monitors quality and yield of material produced, completes root cause investigation and implements corrective actions. Develops standard operating procedures and proper practices in the production of material.
  • Troubleshoot production problems relating to raw materials, equipment, and/or processing conditions.
  • Prepare Capital Project requests and acts as Project Manager to complete approved projects.
  • Prepare activity reports to keep Plant managers and Director of Manufacturing informed about the status of projects and duties.
  • Assist in the installation of equipment or processes; train production personnel in the proper operating conditions for new products; maintain records and documentation of scale up conditions and finished product results.
  • Learns and maintains proficiency with purchasing, shipping and receiving, and other local systems needed to effectively move raw materials and finished goods through the manufacturing process.
  • Assists with compliance to safety and environmental programs on site.
  • Maintains a positive and healthy relationship with the community and regulatory agencies.
  • Performs other related duties.
  • Responsible for food safety

QUALIFICATIONS: 

BS degree in an engineering discipline with a functional knowledge of both general engineering principals and manufacturing techniques. Chemical or industrial engineering experience strongly valued, as is practical work experience in Lean and/or Six Sigma improvement environments. A minimum of 5 years experience in a manufacturing environment with chemical or food manufacturing experience preferred. Direct supervisory experience strongly preferred. Ideal candidates possess a blend of both manufacturing supervision as well as project engineering work experiences. Must be able to travel up to 40%

Work intermittently involves climbing, standing, walking, balance and coordination when checking out sites or equipment. Travel is required on specific assignments
