R&D Process Development Engineer

Location: Bridgeton, MO


The R&D Process Development Engineer is responsible for scaling up new products, evaluating new raw materials/ingredients, and process development and technology assessment for the appropriate Research and Development groups within Ingredient Solutions. The process primarily is wet processing, mixing, liquid and dry blending, and liquid and dry packaging. The R&D Process Development Engineer will record, analyze results and provide recommendations in experimental and Plant Trial summary reports to management.  This role will also provide technical service to customers as well as process engineering technical support to Production and Quality as assigned.



  • Develops new processes and products for the appropriate group, which includes proper instructions for manufacturing process and formulation; Primarily process ops will include wet mixing, liquid and dry blending, and liquid and dry packaging
  • Completes the scale up trials and plant trials for all appropriate groups of R&D within Ingredient Solutions but primarily Flavors Systems group; Completes the development of trial plans and communication of these plans with all parties involved
  • Commercialization; Works closely with manufacturing on integrating and adapting R&D formulas to full production quantities
  • Provides engineering technical assistance to Production as necessary including, startup of newly developed products; Mainly focused in Flavor Systems 
  • Assists Technical Development Manager of Technology Transfer as necessary
  • Assists in the process of completing projects in lab, pilot plant, and plant including the use of vats, steam kettles, homogenizer, batch pasteurizer, HTST, blenders, or other equipment 
  • Reports and evaluate results from experimental trials
  • Assists Quality with evaluation of product complaints and provide troubleshooting expertise
  • Works with Sales to assist customers with technical service
  • Works with Procurement to test alternate raw materials/ingredients in order to evaluate suitability for substitution in an existing production situation or new formula development 
  • Tests new equipment proposed and provide written summary reports with recommendations. Set up trials at potential equipment manufacturers and copackers as necessary
  • Maintains accurate files of all R&D work completed. Maintain all project files and Lab Notebooks as required
  • Completes weekly updates in Salesforce and communicate project status to Sales
  • Stays current with new technology and developments and maintain professional contacts with individuals and organizations. Build and maintain relationships with current and potential customers
  • Provides research and technical support in all marketing efforts across appropriate business pillar
  • Participates in scheduled meetings
  • Keep supervisor informed at all times



  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Food Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering is required
  • 3+ years’ experience in Process Development, New Product Development and/or Process Scale-up
  • Working in a food laboratory in a dairy, wet processing, or food ingredient facility is desired
  • Knowledge and experience with principals of food processing, food science, food and dairy chemistry, biochemistry, wet processing, liquid and dry mixing/blending, and liquid and dry packaging are essential to successfully perform job
  • Engineering principle knowledge and experience is required
  • The ability to develop new products from all aspects is required
  • An understanding of each piece of processing equipment utilized is required (ie: vats, steam kettles, liquid and dry mixing/blending equipment, liquid and dry packaging, homogenizer, HTST, retort, and drying)
  • Spray drying and/or agglomeration experience is a plus
  • Ability to conduct experimental design tests and accurately report results in a manner suitable for presentation to customers and management
  • Knowledge of plant operations is required to assist as a technical resource in Production during trials
  • Collaborative, problem solving, good communication and ability to work with minimal supervision, as well as with others are skills for good job performance
  • Ability to go from the lab/benchtop process to pilot plant and then to the manufacturing plant is a must
  • Detail oriented and multitasking is a must
  • Complete computer skills required (Microsoft office, Genesis, etc)



  • Normal Office environment; Lab environment, and plant environment
  • Must be able to work on their feet for extended periods of time in lab, pilot plant, and plant.  Will be required to lift and carry large boxes or push carts, etc.  Work environment may be noisy, wet, and slippery and hot at times
