Chemical Operator I

POSITION SUMMARY:

Prepares and fills containers (drums/cylinders) according to prescribed operational and safety standards; operates automatic, semi-automatic machines and hand tools; moves containers; load/unload trucks; performs housekeeping duties to maintain equipment and work areas in clean and functional condition.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Unloads empty containers from trucks utilizing specific safety procedures to ensure proper handling and worker safety; obtains containers documentation such as bill of lading, counts containers to ensure count agrees with documented number, inspects containers for damage, logs in returned containers and stores containers.
  • Checks to see that all transfer equipment is operational and functioning; this includes equipment such as scales, pumps, compressors, monitors, etc.
  • Purges returned containers of all liquid as required; positions containers; makes proper connection; monitors purging and filling processes following specific operational and safety procedures.
  • Fills containers by following specific operational and safety procedures; ensures that scale is operating properly and ensures that marked tare weight agrees with actual tare weight; attaches grounding wire, connects vent line, opens valves, sets scales to appropriate levels to prevent overfilling; constantly monitors the filling operation to ensure protection against malfunction; closes valves, properly pressurizes containers, tightens container valves and checks for leaks when containers have been filled; applies correct labels and caps to filled containers and stores containers in full container area
  • Prepares list of specific containers to fill plant order; attaches prepared paperwork to container ensuring accuracy of documents; loads containers onto truck for shipment; may be called on to perform computer data entry.
  • Operates and utilizes a variety of equipment, machines, and devices such as forklift, pallet jack, hand truck wrenches and other hand tools, and protective clothing.
  • Performs housekeeping duties such as cleaning, washing, disassembling and reassembling equipment as needed; sweep and/or wash floors and work areas to keep equipment and work area clean.
  • Attends safety meetings as scheduled.
  • Follows all safety policies and procedures including use of safety equipment (PPE) and equipment safeguards.
  • Performs other related duties as needed.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to read and write, perform mathematical calculations, and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Good oral communication skills
  • Previous chemical experience required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Continuous physical activity throughout the workday such as walking, stooping, pushing, pulling and lifting up to 100 pounds, hearing, talking, repetitive motions and moving objects up to 1,100 pounds with manual equipment such as hand trucks.
  • Ability to distinguish colors and operate a forklift
  • Works inside and outside, subject to changes in temperature and other weather conditions, noise above ambient levels, proximity to moving mechanical parts, potential exposure to chemicals, which is constantly monitored, and wear protective clothing when performing specific procedures.

SALARY RANGE: $26-$30 per hour
