R&D Intern

POSITION SUMMARY:

The R&D Intern will support the Animal Nutrition and Health (ANH) team. This role offers hands-on experience in research and development activities, focusing on learning and contributing to projects that enhance product innovation. The intern will assist with laboratory and pilot-scale work, data collection, and documentation under the guidance of experienced scientists. This is an excellent opportunity to gain exposure to formulation chemistry, process development, and the fundamentals of product scale-up.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist with laboratory experiments and pilot plant activities, including basic tasks related to extrusion, granulation, and fluidized bed operation under supervision.
  • Support formulation trials and help prepare samples for testing.
  • Collect, organize, and document experimental data accurately.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute ideas for improving processes and formulations.
  • Learn and apply basic principles of design of experiments (DOE).
  • Conduct literature searches to support ongoing projects and summarize findings for the team.
  • Follow all safety protocols and maintain a clean, organized work environment.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned to support R&D initiatives.

Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in college, a graduate program or have recently graduated.
  • 1+ years experience working in an R&D laboratory in an academic or industry setting.
  • Working towards a degree in the Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, Physics, Food Science, or Polymer Science.

Required Skills

  • Detail-focused working style.
  • The ability to work in a muti-disciplinary team to tackle difficult problems harmoniously.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Mastery of chemistry bench skills and knowledge of basic laboratory techniques.
  • The ability to quickly learn existing protocols and build new protocols to advance projects as needed.

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of or experience with material characterization techniques (DSC, rheology, texture analysis, etc.)
  • Knowledge of or experience in formulation chemistry, polymeric formulations, emulsions, and gels.
  • Experience formulating products and with the associated material process steps.
  • Proficiency in data management and analysis, with experience using relevant tools and software.

The estimated salary range for this position is $20 -$25 an hour.
